Windows 7

So … yesterday I received my Win7 disc from DELL. That was the deal, when I bought this computer, two months ago, that I would get Win7 as soon as it was released.
The instruction for the installation was pretty straightforward. It told me to stay connected during the installation. However, and that was the part that made me feel most uncertain during this process: It [the first part] removed/uninstalled my wireless network card! So there was no way of staying connected during the installation.

I think that made a big difference. In that end of the process, there was a point where I had a choice. The first choice was green and was the recommended way … but I couldn’t select that because I wasn’t online. I have a feeling of that it made a clean install and put some stuff in a folder called Windows.old.
So far I’ve only been using it for one evening and now this morning. I lost the integrated webcam. Searched all the forums at DELL, and there were oodles of people asking the very same questions. I think they must do something about that, because it came with the computer — it’s brand new and it should work, since it’s there!

I’ve looked for drivers, I’ve tried to open it from the Windows.old folder but that tells me there are missing files.
Last night when I went to bed, I closed the lid as usual. This morning the computer was shut off. That’s new! It used to wake up when I opened the lid. Went into the power options and looked what closing the lid is supposed to do. It said SLEEP. To be honest, I don’t know what the difference is between SLEEP and HIBERNATION, but either way it was completely shut off this morning.

Well, it’s way too early to tell what this is like. It LOOKS nice alright.. and I had the opportunity to try Vista for two months. I’d heard so many negative things about it, but never experienced any trouble during my short period with it.  Okay, it was a little annoying with all those pop-up security boxes or whatever, but that was all.
I want my web cam back and I want to just wake it up in the morning … that’s all I can say at this point.

Google Wave

Last Tuesday, I got my eagerly awaited Google Wave invitation.
My opinion of it now, after having used it a few days, is like most other peoples’ …a little confused but basically positive.  I do like it, and I’m looking forward to check in there in the morning when I get up.

Right now, while it’s still in its early stage and nobody is really certain of the usage of it, it’s just a lot of FUN! It’s like chatting, when Internet was new to most of us… It’s complicated to do the simplest thing, and you must find out exactly how to do a simple search, but once you’re starting to get the hang of a few things it gets funnier.
When I first signed in, none of my friends had an account, except the person who invited me and she wasn’t online. I somehow found out how to do a public search so that I could see all the waves scrolling by. I was lucky because I found the Swedish Wave and immediately began learning the ropes but I still can’t really explain what it is.

I can see several usages for it in the future, when it’s public and stable, but I think it’s too complicated for the average Internet user. If they want to make it as BIG as it’s been predicted, I think a lot of things must be simplified. It’s still very early though..

Garlic Fingers @ GarlicFingers.com

Garlic fingers is an Atlantic Canadian dish, much similar to a pizza in shape and size, and made with the same type of dough.

Instead of the traditional tomato sauce and toppings, it is garnished with melted butter, garlic and cheese. Seasonings, like parsley, may also be added.

It is often eaten as a side dish with pizza, dipped in donair sauce. Instead of being cut in triangular slices, they are presented in thin strips, or “fingers”.

It can be topped with bacon bits and is often eaten with donair sauce.

This is yummy…beyond words :)

The Rose

The first time in my life I heard this song, it was sung by Burl Ives. Not until now have I been able to find it again with him.

Posterize.us

In my previous post, I made some remark about sense of community … in Tumblr, and perhaps the lack thereof in Posterous. A few minutes after I’d done that, I came across THIS! :)

Whoever started it, it’s a great initiative.

POLL: Tumblr Edges Out Posterous in Reader Vote

tumblr-posterousIf you were with us last week, you witnessed a mighty battle between our two winning browsers from an earlier poll, Firefox and Chrome. Almost 9,000 votes later, Firefox emerged victorious and took the crown for Favorite Mashable Browser.

Earlier this week we kicked off a new Faceoff, this time pitting Tumblr against Posterous for the simple blogging service crown. We have the winner of this contest now, drumroll please…

Tumblr (Tumblr

) ended up taking the title in a relatively close race with 51% of the vote. Many of you cited the community surrounding Tumblr as a great reason to use the tool, and many in the Posterous (Posterous

) camp said the simplicity of posting by email was unbeatable.

Still, in the end Tumblr came out on top with 1809 votes to Posterous’s 1496 (42%). The remainder of the voters couldn’t decide, with 256 or 7% reporting being unable to choose a victor.

Thanks for tuning in to the second in our Faceoff series. Be sure to check back on Monday for the next round of dueling web services!

Web Faceoff: Overall Results

Week 1:
- Mozilla Firefox (Mozilla Firefox

) vs. Google Chrome (Google Chrome

)
- WINNER: Firefox (Firefox

), 4600 votes (Chrome (Chrome

): 3310 votes, Tie: 911 votes)

Week 2:
- Tumblr vs. Posterous
- WINNER: Tumblr, 1809 votes (Posterous: 1496 votes, Tie: 256 votes)

I read here that many stated the sense of community in Tumblr. That I can understand. We don’t have much of that here in Posterous, that I know of. In that case it has eluded me completely.

In a highly unusual move, a federal judge has ordered Google to deactivate the email account of a user who was mistakenly sent confidential financial information by a bank.

The order, issued Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge James Ware in the northern district of California, also requires Google to disclose the Gmail account holder’s identity and contact information. The Gmail user hasn’t been accused of any wrongdoing.

The ruling stems from a monumental error by the Wilson, Wyo.-based Rocky Mountain Bank. On Aug. 12, the bank mistakenly sent names, addresses, social security numbers and loan information of more than 1,300 customers to a Gmail address. When the bank realized the problem, it sent a message to that same address asking the recipient to contact the bank and destroy the file without opening it. No one responded, so the bank contacted Google to ask for information about the account holder.

In keeping with its privacy policy, Google told the bank it would have to get a court order to obtain such data. The bank then filed papers asking a court to order Google to disclose the information and deactivate the account.

The bank attempted to file its papers under seal, but U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Whyte denied that request. Earlier this week, the case was transferred to Ware from Whyte.

Some lawyers say the Ware’s order is problematic because it affects the Gmail account holder’s First Amendment rights to communicate online, as well as his or her privacy rights.

“It’s outrageous that the bank asked for this, and it’s outrageous that the court granted it,” says John Morris, general counsel at the Center for Democracy & Technology. “What right does the bank have and go suspend the email account of a completely innocent person?”

He adds: “At the end of the day, the bank obviously screwed up. But it should not be bringing a lawsuit against two completely innocent parties and disrupting one of the innocent party’s email contact to the world.”

Eric Goldman, director of the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara University, adds that the judge’s order could have significant ramifications for the Gmail account holder. “Losing an email account is a big deal,” he said. “It’s very disconcerting to think that a judge could simply order my account deactivated.”

Changing colors ...

Decided to make this page white instead … it was so dark.
I wanted to keep that top bar, the black one — that’s the header-background — but also put in an image of the title with my favorite font [for the moment]. I put that in as H1 background and that worked fine, except that I couldn’t hide the text that was there in the first place.

Went into the ‘Customize’ mode instead of ‘Advanced’ and removed the text, but then the image wouldn’t show. The only solution to that, that I could come up with, was to type a whole bunch of   in the box where the title was. That worked.

Posterous Theming: It's here, it's live, and it's time to make your site yours! - The Official Posterous Posterous

Hey Jeff — good idea. It’ll be up to the theme designer to allow color changes. Unfortunately it is way too easy to myspace-ify blogs if you allow total and complete control of all colors. We believe that the theme designer should have final control over what is customizable, and its not possible to provide total color control to end users.  Background images are coming soon — it’ll be a special feature that theme designers can take advantage of.

Header images will usually be 500px across, and up to 500px high. Again, this is up to the theme designer.  Hope that helps!

hi Garry - thanks for the timely reply! I hear what you are saying about the colors - I expect if I really want to change things I could dive into the CSS. I know enough to be dangerous. Still, a set of totally color-customizable themes would be welcome by this end user!

Again, for each theme a recommended size for a header image and an idea of placement will be a big help. I could do it by trial and error (“oh, that’s where it goes”) but why? Recommendations would also help avoid excessive Myspaceiness ;)

Good to hear about background images - cheers! - j

What I’m expecting to see soon, is a place for sharing ready-made Posterous themes…
