Out to the ocean

Yesterday, we went out for a spin. More or less just in order to get out of the building. We went to places we’ve been many times before … Duck Pond Beach, St. Martin and Quaco.

A line from a song with Leann Womack came to mind … «I hope you never lose your sense of wonder…», as I was looking at the caves in St. Martin. I’ve seen them quite a few times now and I hope I never lose that feeling of awe.

Often when I see homes along the shoreline, I wonder about the people living there…if they’re still able to appreciate the beauty of it all after some time?!

A/C

I have no idea how the other people live on this floor in this apartment building. Not all of them have a/c. I’ve checked. This afternoon I thought I was going to die. Started feeling nauseous, had to get out of here for a while. Sat on a bench outside the building and was thinking how I would survive this night. It was either a hotel room or I would have ended up in hospital.

Now a cooling unit from Walmart is sitting here in the window and nice, cool air is coming in. I’ve lived in many hot apartments but this was the worst. We do love the place though…

These weeks have been awful — haven’t been able to do my usual stuff. Ordinary things like vacuuming had to be done really early, before the worst set in. Not to mention all the sleepless nights… last night I was out on the balcony at 4 o’clock in the morning, enjoying the rain.

Bought a tripod today. $32 in Walmart! It’s good!!! I’m happy because I was so close to spending $300 in Appleby’s. This one is fine — now I can take night shots or fireworks whenever there are any.

New month

We’ve had a long period of hot and muggy weather. It’s not over yet and I haven’t even been able to think clearly enough to write something. We’ve tried to be out as much as possible because this apartment is unbearable. I’ve shot a few of my usual duck photos though. The writing will have to wait.

SJ Flickr Group

Today we did a photo walk again with the Saint John Flickr group. Today’s theme was churches. We did two … Grace Presbyterian on Coburg Street and The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception on Waterloo Street. There are so many churches here — would have taken ages to visit more, considering how long time it took with these two. There used to be a synagogue here too, but apparently the Jewish population has diminished so much so that they no longer even have a rabbi here. The building is still standing there — they’ve sold it and I don’t know what’s going to become of it.

It was a lot of fun to meet the group again — it’s such a nice and informal group. For some reason I was not happy at all with my photos when I came home and brought them up on the computer. Something was wrong with the coloring…most of them were yellowish. I tried to correct that but still wasn’t happy. I have a lot to learn about indoor photography, that’s obvious. All my other photos are taken outdoors … ducks ‘n stuff.

Sweltering heat

Common seal or Harbour seal, Phoca vitulina

Image via Wikipedia

Normally I wouldn’t write a headline about the weather, but right now that’s what is on top of my mind. We had some rainy days — yesterday started out overcast, looking like it would start to rain again any time. Went out to the shopping mall, spent some time in there and when we got out it was like if someone had thrown a wet, hot blanket over us. The sun was shining, and the mugginess was something I’d never experienced before.

In the evening we just couldn’t stay inside this apartment so we took the ferry up to the Kingston peninsula. With the A/C on in the car and the nice ferry ride, all was pleasant … until I stepped out of the car beside a bog, where I saw that Osprey earlier this summer.

Getting out, outside the car, was brutal. All was still …. perfectly calm … and HOT. The frogs were croaking, that was the only sound.

The tower where the Osprey had its nest had fallen. I don’t know if it was the weight of the nest or some storm … it was just broken down.

The rain commenced on our way back. Quite the downpour, but it didn’t help. The mugginess remained. Today wasn’t much better.

My husband had an early Dr:s appointment. When he came back home and opened up the local paper, the first thing he saw was the very same Dr. he’d just seen. There was a reportage about his work in Africa as a plastic surgeon.

Went down to the Reversing Falls. The tide was coming in and I was hoping to get some good shots of the harbor seals that quite often come in with the tide. They were too far off, unfortunately. Instead I practiced a little with taking photos of the cormorants coming in for landing. They looks so funny when they land.

This turned out like a diary, but I just felt like writing to take my thoughts off the fact that I’m sweating profusedly and it’s 10 o’ clock in the evening PLUS the fact that the summer has just started!!!
